It can happen here too

Some years ago, a New Zealand wine distributor had a project to import and brand a Chilean wine for the New Zealand market. The brand name “El Pico”, meaning “mountain” in Spanish, was chosen as a good wine name - distinctive, easy to say and remember, and connecting the wine to the land.

The labels were on the press when a native Chilean happened to visit the printers and saw it. He was horrified, and told the printers to stop the press immediately. While "El Pico" is a perfectly harmless word in Spain, in Chile the word is slang for 'man with an enormous erection!'

The wine label was subsequently rebranded "La Pica" - the feminine form, meaning only "mountain" in any dialect. One way or another, if you are a New Zealand company producing for the local market, lack of local knowledge can lead to many traps.

These are risks most companies can't afford to take, yet embarrassing errors are all too common with export packaging, websites and marketing materials.
